ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the impact of infrastructural development on economic growth in Nigeria, using Uyo in Akwa Ibom state as a case study. The classical theory of economic growth was adopted in the study coupled with other theories of public expenditure. Two infrastructural variables: electric (energy)and road transport were adopted for the study. The study aims to access the impact of development road transport and power supply on the economic growth in the state. Data was obtained from primary source with distributed questionnaire structured with respect to the objectives of the study. The Chi-Square analysis was used to test hypothesis according to the objective of the study. The study revealed that development in road transport and power supply have strong impact on economic growth. Development in these key infrastructure increased output and created business opportunities, reduced the cost of transportation, time trekking and man hour, thus increasing output and GDP of the nation in general. Also the development in road transport reduced traffic congestion and accidents in Uyo. In Addition, development in the power sector expanded economic activities in Uyo. Recommendations were suggested based on the findings that since selected public infrastructure of the study revealed a strong positive relationship with economic growth, more of tax payer’s money should be channeled to development of these infrastructure. Also, all stakeholders in the project of infrastructural provision should be involved and more emphasis should be laid on the quality of infrastructure to be provided.
